Piracy was called dead and done in the year 2020 but in 2024, sites had seen more views than the current paid platforms and in many cases, more than some combined. This became very concerning to those companies as people had been slowly dropping subscriptions in favor of said sites.
With how Crunchyroll switched.subtitles for fall of 2025 and the rise of prices on the site earlier made many decide it was better to pirate over paying. The company has also posted many shows as of fall 2025 later than their pirate counterparts, in some cases by several days.
Disney has been getting worse over the years with many movies and shows failing to meet expectations let alone surpass them, causing the company to hemorrhage money. Combine that with people who choose to forgo a subscription in place of piracy, the company could easily see a far higher loss than what their books currently show.
Netflix who we have seen go on a slight binge acquiring anime, at one point having more than Crunchyroll, along with producing it’s own shows get hit. With movies such as Cuties being ported over for American audiences along with several news outlets finding out about its children’s content having LGBT+ content has caused many to leave their service.
At the end, these platforms along with the huge variety to choose from has caused many to simply quit paying for several services, opting for a VPN subscription. On a side note, I do like MullVad as you do not need an email or password but they do generate a 16 digit code to use and do accept cash along with crypto if you want to remain 100% anonymous.
Now, I do not recommend pirating shows, but simply explaining as to why people are going this route. Also, having a VPN does not mean one is guilty of anything but simply securing themselves from those who do wish to do harm. Lastly, being mindful of sites and safe browsing will aid in keeping one secure. Stay safe and be informed.
