Sony is not backing away from live-service games.
Hideaki Nishino, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said PlayStation still sees long-term potential in online games built around ongoing updates, active communities, and years of player engagement.
According to Nishino, Sony wants to keep challenging itself in this area rather than abandon it. That means live-service games will likely remain part of PlayStation’s strategy going forward, even as the company continues to balance them with the single-player exclusives it is best known for.
The goal is simple: create games that give players a reason to keep coming back. Instead of releasing a game and moving on, live-service titles are designed to grow over time through new content, events, multiplayer features, and community support.
For Sony, this is about more than just one game or one trend. The company believes live-service games can help grow the gaming market by keeping players connected for longer periods and building stronger communities around PlayStation titles.
Of course, the live-service space is risky. These games require constant support, steady content updates, and a loyal player base. Not every project succeeds, and players can be skeptical when companies push too hard into online-only or always-updated experiences.
Still, PlayStation appears committed to trying. Nishino’s comments make it clear that Sony still believes there is room for live-service games in its future, even if the company has to be careful about how it approaches them.
PlayStation’s challenge now is finding the right balance: keeping its reputation for strong story-driven games while also building online experiences that players actually want to stay with for years.
