Anthropic Safety Research Chief Resigns, Warning That “The World Is in Peril”

Mrinank Sharma, the head of Anthropic’s Safeguards Research Team, resigned from the artificial-intelligence company, with his final day reportedly falling on February 9, 2026. His departure has drawn attention not merely because of his senior role, but because of the stark warning he issued while announcing it.

In a public letter shared on X, Sharma wrote that “the world is in peril,” pointing to a combination of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, biological-weapons risks, and growing fractures within society. These dangers, he argued, are not isolated problems. They reinforce one another, creating an environment in which poor decisions in one area may intensify crises elsewhere.

Sharma also described the personal and institutional difficulty of remaining guided by one’s values when facing powerful outside pressures. His comments suggested that organizations publicly committed to safety can still struggle to preserve that commitment when commercial competition, government demands, and political interests enter the equation.

A Growing Conflict Between Safety and Power

Anthropic was founded with a reputation for placing AI safety at the center of its work. The company has often presented itself as a more cautious alternative within an industry racing to develop increasingly capable systems.

Sharma’s resignation, however, raises questions about whether even safety-focused companies can withstand the pressures surrounding advanced AI.

According to Sharma, a gap had begun to emerge between Anthropic’s stated safety-first mission and the realities influencing its decisions. These pressures reportedly included commercial demands and requests from the Pentagon to loosen restrictions affecting military applications of artificial intelligence.

The controversy reflects a broader dilemma facing the AI industry. Companies developing powerful systems must compete for funding, customers, government contracts, and technological leadership. At the same time, they are expected to prevent those same systems from being misused for surveillance, warfare, biological threats, political manipulation, or other harmful purposes.

The danger is that safety may remain a central principle only while it is convenient. Once safeguards interfere with revenue, military objectives, or geopolitical competition, companies and governments may begin treating those restrictions as obstacles rather than protections.

Artificial Intelligence and Biological Threats

Sharma’s warning about the relationship between AI and bioweapons is particularly serious.

Advanced AI systems could provide enormous benefits to medicine and biological research. They may help scientists understand diseases, design treatments, and analyze complex genetic information. Yet the same capabilities could potentially be misused to assist in the development of dangerous pathogens or biological weapons.

This is known as a dual-use problem: the same knowledge that helps cure disease can also be used to cause harm.

The risk becomes greater when combined with social instability. A fractured society may be more vulnerable to extremist movements, misinformation, distrust of institutions, and political violence. Powerful technology introduced into such an environment does not automatically repair those divisions. It may instead amplify them.

Sharma’s argument appears to be that humanity is facing several interconnected emergencies while continuing to treat them as separate issues. AI development, biological security, political polarization, and institutional decay may all influence one another.

Leaving Technology for Poetry

Following his departure from Anthropic, Sharma announced that he intended to return to the United Kingdom and pursue a degree in poetry.

At first glance, leaving advanced AI safety research to study poetry may appear unusual. Yet Sharma framed the decision as part of a larger commitment to what he called “courageous speech.”

Poetry has long been a way for people to confront subjects that governments, corporations, and institutions would prefer to avoid. It can express moral concerns that technical reports and corporate statements often soften through cautious language.

His decision may therefore represent more than a career change. It may be an attempt to reclaim an independent voice outside an industry where employees can face pressure to balance their ethical concerns against corporate loyalty and professional consequences.

In highly technical fields, moral questions can become buried beneath statistics, benchmarks, policies, and risk assessments. Poetry approaches the same problems through human experience, fear, responsibility, and conscience.

Part of a Broader Industry Pattern

Sharma’s resignation is not occurring in isolation.

Across the artificial-intelligence industry, researchers and executives have departed companies after expressing concern about safety priorities, governance, or the speed of development. Similar departures at organizations such as OpenAI have contributed to growing public uncertainty about whether AI companies are genuinely capable of regulating themselves.

These resignations do not necessarily prove that disaster is imminent or that every AI company has abandoned safety. They do, however, reveal persistent disagreement among the people closest to the technology.

When senior safeguards researchers leave organizations that publicly emphasize responsible AI, their reasons deserve serious consideration. They may possess direct knowledge of internal conflicts that the public cannot otherwise see.

The problem is larger than any single company. Even if one organization adopts strict safeguards, competitors or governments may choose fewer restrictions in pursuit of an advantage. This creates a race in which caution can be punished and recklessness rewarded.

Who Decides How AI Is Used?

Sharma’s departure raises an important question: Who should determine the limits placed on powerful artificial-intelligence systems?

Private companies cannot be expected to make decisions affecting global security solely according to their financial interests. Governments also cannot be assumed to use these systems responsibly, particularly when military competition is involved.

Meaningful oversight may require independent researchers, international agreements, whistleblower protections, transparent safety testing, and institutions capable of resisting both corporate and political pressure.

Without such protections, safety teams risk becoming symbolic. They may exist to reassure the public while lacking the authority to prevent dangerous decisions.

The value of safeguards depends not merely on whether a company employs safety researchers, but on whether those researchers can influence the company when their recommendations become inconvenient.

A Warning Worth Hearing

It is possible to dismiss Sharma’s letter as pessimistic or overly dramatic. The phrase “the world is in peril” is undeniably severe.

Yet the underlying concerns are not difficult to understand. Humanity is building increasingly powerful systems while international tensions, biological risks, political division, and public distrust continue to grow.

Technology is advancing faster than the institutions expected to control it.

Sharma’s resignation should not be viewed only as an internal dispute at Anthropic. It reflects a much broader struggle over whether artificial intelligence will remain governed by ethical boundaries or be shaped primarily by profit, military power, and political influence.

His decision to leave the industry for poetry may seem like a retreat from the technological world. It may instead be a different form of resistance: an effort to speak clearly when institutional language no longer feels capable of expressing the danger.

Whether his warning proves prophetic remains unknown. But when the person responsible for safeguarding powerful technology resigns while declaring that the world is in peril, the responsible response is not immediate dismissal.

It is to listen.
